The story

History Dictionary

The nobility was just like the clergy and the people, one of the three states or orders that made up society in Middle Ages. Like the clergy, the nobility was a privileged order, receiving from the king various perks such as land (with which the landlords were formed), pensions, and tax exemption. By virtue of these perks received from the king, the nobles were considered his direct vassals. The main function of the nobility was, in the Middle Ages, the defense of the other two classes: the clergy and the people. In addition to the military function, it was from the high nobility that the main members of the court and the holders of the main administrative positions were chosen.
